Just words?

Are they just words?

Florence, Italy 1992
After a huge discussion on my phone bill which, Dutch as I am, I didn’t want to pay the full amount and I was negotiating a new rate, my land lady actually gave me a compliment. “Sei una ragazza in gamba”, she said.

Back then I didn’t understand these words, I had to look them up in the dictionary (it means: you’re a smart girl), but before I did so, I gave them my own, deeper meaning. To me the phrase meant: “You will get there”, “You will reach your goals”.

Ever since that day, these words travelled with me. I use this phrase whenever I’m facing a difficult task. Using the deeper meaning that I gave to it.

Later in my life I learned that a phrase like this is called an affirmation. A strong sentence that you keep repeating for yourself in order to create positive change.

Florence Italy 2024
After all these years I’m back in beautiful Florence and it feels like time stood still. I suddenly see the girl from back then. She smiles at me and tells me I haven’t changed. I’m still that girl, I’m still the ragazza in gamba. I hear these words being whispered all around me and I just know, whatever goal I wish to reach: I will get there!

What supporting words travel with you throughout your life?

Het meisje in de olifant (🇬🇧 English below)

Een olifant was ze, krachtig, oersterk. Maar ze was ook grijs, lomp, stug en zwaar. Ze had zich laten opsluiten in de dierentuin van de mensenwereld. Dat had ze zelf gedaan. Zorgvuldig had ze met haar slurf telkens een steen gepakt en deze gestapeld, totdat er een hele dikke, oerdegelijke muur ontstond. Stevig was de…

And then, you’re on your own.

Do you recall a situation when you were suddenly on your own? * Leaving your parents’ house when you went to university?* The loss of a loved one?* A divorce? There are many situations in which we all of a sudden feel left alone. I’m currently in such a situation. I left my job, my…

MOVE!

One of my friends is a cyclist. I never understood the fun of cycling. To me cycling is not particularly fun, a bike is a way to transport me from A to B. Last September, when we had some beautiful sunny days, I thought of going for a swim at a local outdoor swimming pool.…
