To stretch or to overstretch, that’s the question!

Who is number 1 on your priority list?

“Make a wishlist and prioritize yourself, you are your own number one.” My teacher said to me.

Believe me, I did some serious overstretching in my life!

What it brought me? I learned. But to be honest, sometimes I really learned the hard way. While not listening to my bodies signals I created some serious troubles for myself.

It was yoga that introduced me to learning how to stretch, but not to overstretch. It taught me that I should challenge my body just enough to let it work, to let it grow, and in the mean time to feel the signals when I went too far. A very delicate and interesting balance.

To me it became even more interesting when I realized that whatever I practised on my yoga mat, I also practised in daily life. This way of thinking and finding my balance is very valuable throughout my day. If I notice losing my balance, my questions to myself are: Did I stretch here or did I overstretch? Was I number 1 on my priority list today?

O, yes, I improved hugely since the day my teacher opened my eyes.

But, even after all these years of yoga and having these words of my teacher in my back pocket for years now, I still forget about them sometimes. I feel that I’m moving too far, I think I can do it, just a bit longer, deeper, further, and ‘bang’, I crossed the line….. AGAIN….

Recognizable?

Shake hands with me and let’s promise each other to keep repeating these valuable words of my teacher, because then, one day……

We truly are our own number one!

And then, you’re on your own.

Do you recall a situation when you were suddenly on your own? * Leaving your parents’ house when you went to university?* The loss of a loved one?* A divorce? There are many situations in which we all of a sudden feel left alone. I’m currently in such a situation. I left my job, my…

MOVE!

One of my friends is a cyclist. I never understood the fun of cycling. To me cycling is not particularly fun, a bike is a way to transport me from A to B. Last September, when we had some beautiful sunny days, I thought of going for a swim at a local outdoor swimming pool.…

DON’T STOP ME NOW (CAUSE I’M HAVING A GOOD TIME)

“Don’t stop me now” – Queen 1978 “Tonight I’m gonna have myself a real good time, I feel alive”. I’m cutting through every safety cord that I had left. I feel insecure, but also determined.  If I truly want to be free, I need to release all boundaries.I did the thing that scared me most:…
