“Poen”, a casual Dutch street word for money. Currently used less because language evolves over time. Nowadays, in the streets of Amsterdam, you might hear “doekoe” or “monnie”, or even something else that I’m not aware of. But, I love the alliteration. And it’s my blog, so, I get to choose and stick to “Poen”.
A while ago, one of my thoughts struck me: “If I could only combine my work more with my passions, what would my life look like?”.
Writing this phrase down and overthinking what it meant, I heard the voice of a dear friend echoing in my head. He would call this last thought my edge. It’s the part of me that sees the bears on the road to take new steps. It’s the part of me that says creativity and income don’t go hand in hand. He’s right, of course, but….thinking about living my life in line with my passion, my mind tells me I need to pay my mortgage and the college education of my kids, blahblahblah.
This “but” is actually the edge that I’m facing. It’s my “Money-doesn’t-grow-on-trees” edge.
What is holding me back to live my passion?
My subconscious says to me: it’s your choice, you either do something creative with passion and be poor or you choose a real job and get paid well. While changing things in my life, it was a shock to realize that there is no abundance in this statement at all. In both scenario’s I’ll end up miserable. There is a Passion OR Poen tree growing in my mind instead of a Passion AND Poen tree. It has been treated really well over the years, but the tree brings rotten apples instead of juicy fruits.
As I prefer juicy fruits, I started consciously connecting the dots of wealth and abundance to creativity and here’s the interesting thing that I discovered: it just feels amazingly wealthy to be able to share my creativity. I just can’t feel poor being creative. Not showing my creativity to the world brought this feeling of scarcity. Changing my thoughts and awareness opened up a whole new world of abundance.
When I finally understood that edges are a mindset game, I was able to transform my tree of poverty in a prosperity tree.
I now feel rich in every way:
Doekoe, I love you!
