SLEEP

There is this coffee bar in Amsterdam. The staff used to wear t-shirts stating: ‘sleep is overrated’.

Personally, I disagree. I love a good sleep 😴.

I sleep like a rock lately, but there was a period in my life that sleep was complicated. I’m willing to share now and how I reached a breakthrough, but back then, honestly, I felt ashamed. Only a few close friends knew… and thank God, I did share this with my closest friends, because one day, one of them brought me a book she used for herself previously. Yes, we’re not alone in our misery, for sure whatever there is that you’re suffering from, someone else is visiting the same dark place.

Next to various advices (invest in a good bed!), the book served a method to reclaim your sleep. As I was truly suffering from a lack of sleep, I dove into it immediately.

The method involved breaking the pattern. To regain my sleep, I first had to increase my tiredness. Based on the instructions of the book, I created a horrible non-sleeping schedule for myself. To me it meant staying awake until 1.15 a.m. and waking up at 6.15 for the first 7 days. If I was lying awake between 1.15 and 6.15 the book summoned me to get out of my bed to a different room for a while, waiting till the sleepy feeling came back again. After 7 days, the book allowed me to, gradually, extend my nights again. GRADUALLY! This meant tiny steps by adding just 15 minutes of sleep.

For weeks, it was true horror. I was so tired that I couldn’t really function normally during the day, feeling exhausted. It was a process that I hated.

But, I gained. My nightrest came back and ever since I sleep like a rock.

Would I do something different? Yes! I did this in January and being awake in the cold and dark nights made it quite a challenge. It was awful staying up late in the dark and getting out of my warm bed in the cold over and over again. Without this extra hurdle the period of reclaiming my sleep was already a tough cookie.

Therefore, I post this blog on purpose in May.

If you have a bad nightrest and consider trying this approach, I would advise to use the coming summer period for it. I wish you all the luck of the world! Let me know if it worked for you the way it did for me! Thank you!

MY PORSCHE Last summer I saw a Porsche in Whistler. It was parked in front of the hotel where my daughter was doing an internship and it immediately stole my heart. THIS was going to be my Porsche one day. It had a special colour blue, greyish blue, which felt just like the right colour…

A little gesture means the world

Last year I was facilitating a storytelling training with my co-host bestie. When he entered the room he gave me this card. It was a simple caring gesture of kindness and it immediately created the positive energy that we always feel when facilitating together.  Sometimes this is litterally just all that it takes. What can…

LET LOVE RULE!

I did an internship in Tunisia when I was 21. In the mornings, I drove to my work to an inland fashion factory. In the evenings, to pay for my rent, I had an extra job, working at the Ruspina hotel animation team, entertaining the hotel quests with sketches, dancing, singing. Back then and there,…
