NEVER SAY NEVER

What is your NEVER EVER?

Singing was never meant for me, to be more precise: I thought I couldn’t sing.

When my daughter was young, we were looking for a way to spend a bit of quality time together. She is the second child of 3. The middle child is often referred to as the independent one, that also sometimes feels left alone, and because of that we wanted to spend some extra time together. We chose singing class and we both loved it. Especially the singing together part, looking each other in the eyes and seeing each other’s joy, was just magic.

One day, my daughter decided to quit (she became a teenager, singing with your mum is no longer cool) and I had 2 options: continuing singing in a choir or solo.

One thing that I never, ever considered was singing in a choir. My opinion on choirs was quite devastating: dull, dusty, boring, old fashioned. Solo was my cup of tea.

Until this year. My singing teacher asked me if I wanted to join a pop-up choir at Paradiso. Despite my never, ever opinion on a choir, singing once in THE Amsterdam POP TEMPLE PARADISO, where all the greatest artist once were on stage, was a no-brainer!

I joined. The experience was a-ma-zing! Apart from being in Paradiso, the feeling of singing together was just so much fun. How could I’ve forgotten about the experience I had singing with my daughter, looking her in the eyes, the joy of togetherness?

How could I’ve been so wrong about singing in a choir?

My never, ever turned into a full membership of the Paradiso choir and I love every bit of it! When I look at the faces of my fellow singers, I can see the joy radiating from them.

A choir is just pure energy and fun!

What is your NEVER EVER? Will you allow it a try?

And then, you’re on your own.

Do you recall a situation when you were suddenly on your own? * Leaving your parents’ house when you went to university?* The loss of a loved one?* A divorce? There are many situations in which we all of a sudden feel left alone. I’m currently in such a situation. I left my job, my…

MOVE!

One of my friends is a cyclist. I never understood the fun of cycling. To me cycling is not particularly fun, a bike is a way to transport me from A to B. Last September, when we had some beautiful sunny days, I thought of going for a swim at a local outdoor swimming pool.…

DON’T STOP ME NOW (CAUSE I’M HAVING A GOOD TIME)

“Don’t stop me now” – Queen 1978 “Tonight I’m gonna have myself a real good time, I feel alive”. I’m cutting through every safety cord that I had left. I feel insecure, but also determined.  If I truly want to be free, I need to release all boundaries.I did the thing that scared me most:…
