Your magic pause button

“Now, take rest, take rest”

If you ever went to a Vipassana meditation course by S.N. Goenka, you know this phrase “Now, take rest, take rest”. During a Vipassana meditation course you meditate for 10 days, 10 hours a day. At the end of each day there’s a lecture by Goenka about the technique and the benefits and after the last meditation of the day Goenka ends with: “Now, take rest, take rest”.

Facing daily life again after Vipassana is mesmerizing. I feel, see, hear things differently. It feels like floating in a well of rest. The magic pause button has been hit and does a tremendous good job. But, over time this amazing feeling fades away, as does Goenka’s advise: “Now, take rest, take rest”. 

I’m aware that I have a pause button. I’m aware that I’m allowed to use it anytime that’s convenient for me. But, I tend to suffocate it under a pile of to-do’s and guilt feelings. It can hardly breathe, let alone that it’s able to yell at me: “Pam, press me, press me now for your own sake. You really need me right now….”.

With suffocating my pause button, I also take away my own breath. My time to breathe calmly. The time I need to get my creativity floating. I know this, because on several occasions, when I finally found it back and pressed it, the magic happened. I could see things differently, I regained my creativity and I was just a better version of me, to myself and my surroundings.
