Dancing alone?!

May I invite you to dance alone occasionally?

A few years ago I wanted to see a movie and litterally no one was available to join me. A friend said ‘why don’t you go alone’. Alone?! I know tons of people go to the movies alone, but for me at that time it was still a bridge I didn’t yet cross in my mind.

As it was the last day I could see this movie, I decided to stop frantically looking for company and do as my friend told me: I went there alone. It appeared to be fun! I enjoyed the movie and next to that, I had a nice conversation with the person seated next to me.

Just a few weeks later I went dancing at a festival with a small group of friends. After a fun afternoon, the start of the evening felt awkward for me. One friend was caught up in a love affair, one went to see some other friends and vanished in the crowd and the latter went to a restaurant for dinner with his wife.

At that moment I could have chosen to go home, but, I decided to stay. Honestly, it wasn’t the best night I ever had. While I was fighting against my loneliness, I was dancing alone.

A year later went to the same festival all by myself. With last years lousy memory and the great experience I had at the movies still fresh in my mind, I thought going alone might be as much fun as going with company. Going alone mainly meant: no expectations.

That day, accepting my loneliness, something interesting happened:

That day, I met a variety of interesting new people.

That day, I found CONNECTION!

Now, I do it more often, dancing alone.

And, yes, it still scares the sh*t out of me. Every time, over and over again I’m scared. But, I cross that line with whole my heart, because it’s worth it.

This month Amsterdam will turn all yellow and black again, because of the Amsterdam Dance Event. If you’re there, have a look around you. You might spot me, amongst friends, or……

MY PORSCHE Last summer I saw a Porsche in Whistler. It was parked in front of the hotel where my daughter was doing an internship and it immediately stole my heart. THIS was going to be my Porsche one day. It had a special colour blue, greyish blue, which felt just like the right colour…

A little gesture means the world

Last year I was facilitating a storytelling training with my co-host bestie. When he entered the room he gave me this card. It was a simple caring gesture of kindness and it immediately created the positive energy that we always feel when facilitating together.  Sometimes this is litterally just all that it takes. What can…

LET LOVE RULE!

I did an internship in Tunisia when I was 21. In the mornings, I drove to my work to an inland fashion factory. In the evenings, to pay for my rent, I had an extra job, working at the Ruspina hotel animation team, entertaining the hotel quests with sketches, dancing, singing. Back then and there,…

Imagine a hamster in a cage with a treadmill. The wheel of the treadmill just goes on and on.That’s what life sometimes feels like.I keep on spinning, I look at my to-do list once more.Just the look of it makes me indecisive.I allow the list to grow under my hands. It’s so easy to add another task…
