Be brave

Last week I went skiing with my oldest daughter. It was my present for her as she passed her exams.

One day when I was changing my shoes, she picked up my skis and stored them in the locker. I was grateful as I was tired after a full day of skiing quite fanatically.

This gesture of her gave me a flashback and I told her the story about when she and her siblings were still young.

I used to drive 1.000 km to Austria with 3 young kids to go skiing. During these holidays, most of the time I was carrying 2 or even 3 pairs of skis.
One year I clearly remember, my girls were snowboarding. One of them fell and lost her board. It slid into a small canyon. She cried. After comforting her, I climbed down the canyon to pick up the board and climbed up again. Half an hour later my son was half way an assembly line lift and dropped his ski. I yelled at him to stay on track, stepped off the track myself to pick up the ski and walked all the way up with his and my skis. The holiday was both exhausting and fun! It meant a lot to me to see these beautiful children enjoying the snow.

I never realized I was being brave at that time, but looking back I can say I was.

Being brave is not only climbing a steep rock, bungee jumping or any other kind of extreme sports, being brave is also in the ordinary. It’s about doing and choosing the things that matter to you.

Seeing my oldest daughter sliding the slopes way better and faster than me last week, she fills my heart with pride.

She’s leaving the house soon as she’s going to study. She’s being brave as she’s choosing the path she really wants to go. I just hope she reminds herself to keep on taking brave steps and follow her heart.
