A cold crash

What does your body tell you?

I finally did it, I jumped into a lake in winter time. The temperature of the water was 6°C.

12 Years ago, I subscribed to a Wim Hof method breathing and ice bath workshop. It got cancelled due to a lack of participants. Back then, I was kind of relieved, as I hate cold, or maybe even stronger, I fear cold.

This year I finally decided to give it another go. I could feel a certain stiffness in my body. Somehow my body reacted as if it were unsafe in a situation that was perfectly safe. There was a pattern in me that I wished to turn around. My body told me that a cold crash would do the trick.

So, I subscribed once again. This time I knew I would have to face my fear of the cold, as in 2024, with all these ice dipping pictures on Instagram, there was no way the workshop would be cancelled due to a lack of interest.

And so I went. While dreading the cold, this first dip turned out to be way more easy and rewarding than I thought it would be. The water was cold, but I wasn’t. I was surprised. The only part of my body that was cold afterwards were my toes. By focussing on my breath and telling my body it was in a safe space, I could feel an instant relaxation.

Over the next weeks continuing my plunges, the positive effects kept piling up. I experienced more energy and a shifted mindset towards some uncomfortable situations.

One day I found myself cycling through the streets of Amsterdam, my clothes soaked from pouring rain, my body cold to the bones, being without a trace of annoyance, feeling fully relaxed. It was an amazing feeling.

I did 5 plunges now. It’s still challenging to go into the water and every time it feels like a victory. My body feels more relaxed now. Did the stiffness fully evade? Honestly, this is still work under construction, but with experiencing positive effects on a daily basis, I trust my body was right and the stiffness will fade away over time.

For now, I just want to thank my co-jumpers and teacher.

Being in this experience together felt like a warm bath!

What challenge will you accept to reset your body?
